Robert “Phattstarz” Boyd is a Philadelphia-born, Houston-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose four-decade journey through music has touched nearly every corner of the industry.
His path began early—forming singing groups and commanding talent show stages as a child in Philadelphia, then spinning records as a teenage DJ at weddings and parties. After high school, while working at an insurance company, a chance meeting with a musician gave him access to high-end recording equipment and ignited his serious pursuit of songwriting and production.
After relocating to Houston, Robert transformed his passion into a profession. He interned at KTSU FM, helping build their acclaimed oldies program Listening Back, while simultaneously establishing a home studio and collaborating with local artists. A connection with a local radio personality opened doors to Houston’s club scene and introduced him to record promoters, leading to work as a photographer for major labels and touring artists. His lens captured some of the biggest names in music, giving him an insider’s view of both the artistry and business of the industry. He later returned to radio, co-hosting an oldies show on KCOH AM.
Today, Robert has built a catalog of over 150 original compositions spanning soul, R&B, funk, and beyond. With decades of experience as a songwriter, producer, photographer, and radio personality, he brings a rare multidimensional perspective to every project.
Robert “Phattstarz” Boyd continues to write, record, and collaborate from his Houston studio, crafting soulful, genre-spanning music with a global sensibility—and he’s ready to share it with the world.
Whether you’re a music supervisor, filmmaker, fellow artist, or just a fan of the groove — I’d love to hear from you.
